NARSID

Non-Avalanche Related Snow Immersion Death (NARSID)

With NARSID, victims suffocate and/or asphyxiate themselves after falling either into a conifer tree well or into a deep snowbank.

The most frequent site of fatality is in a conifer tree well. A tree well is a depression of loose snow that is frequently hidden by low-lying branches so that the victim falls into a pile of concealed soft snow. This concealment makes identification for rescue very difficult.

How does it occur?
The victim typically falls head first into the concealed tree well or a deep snowbank. The skis or snowboard often end up flush with or just below the snow surface with their head buried deeper then their feet.

Prevention of the fall into the deep slope is the key. Self - rescue is nearly impossible. This positioning makes it next to impossible for human rescuers to spot the victim.
